Catch Some Great Transatlantic DX
Scott Caldwell on the Future of Medium Wave DXing
In his article on the Future of Medium Wave DXing - in the June 2021 issue of RadioUser - Scott Caldwell takes us on a fascinating intercontinental journey, showing how you can monitor Medium Wave broadcasts with ease, using both traditional radios and one of the new breed of Software-Defined receivers (SDR).
In this context, for those of us interested in Transatlantic DXing, the ‘X-Band’ (1610-1710kHz) is of particular interest. It is here where you can find – suitable propagation conditions permitting – a plethora of Stateside broadcasters and other signals of interest.
According to Scott, the X-Band offers the European DXer some exciting opportunities. Here, North American stations can be copied without much co-channel interference from European broadcasters (except the various Dutch pirate stations).
Scott’s observations suggest that the X-Band offers the best reception quality during early Spring. A relatively easy station to catch is WPTX on 1690kHz.
